STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT SHIELDS
COMPANY AMID CRISIS

When regulators disclosed that many private drinking water wells, as well as the area’s soil, streams, and groundwater, were contaminated because of historic company operations, executives were faced with a fierce community uproar, intensive media scrutiny, and an ongoing regulatory investigation.

As the company coordinated a responsible response, an authentic stakeholder engagement strategy was central to its successes:

  • No measurable impact on stock price
  • Increased balanced & positive media coverage
  • Attained >60% acceptance rate for solutions to address contamination

The company’s sustainability ratings remained strong with no impact on sales, no surprise public announcements from regulators to fuel negativity, and community sentiment that the company is doing the best it can.

Stakeholder engagement efforts helped shift key strategies to a communication-forward, localized approach that listened openly to residents’ concerns and informed area officials and state regulators about community sentiment. Two-way communications also raised awareness of other concerns that could potentially become future issues, so the company could proactively address them and prevent additional negative news stories. The comprehensive social impact approach addressed issues management, community outreach and engagement, charitable contributions, and engaged local employees and media.
